What does the learning look like in Room 5?

    Reader's Workshop:

Our first Reading Unit is Building a Reading Life.  The goal of the unit is to instill in students the lifelong habits of strong readers, including choosing books wisely, self-assessing, discussing books with peers, and applying comprehension strategies while reading independently.   The mentor text that we will be reading is  Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner.

To become strong readers, students are expected to read at least  20 minutes at home and daily complete a reading log.

    Writer's Workshop:

Our first Writing Unit is Crafting True Stories.   The goals of the unit are to provide a vision for the kind of writing third-graders can do, build upon what students could do as second-graders, and set clear goals and expectations.  By the end of the unit, we will publish our own Personal Narratives.  The mentor text that we will be reading is  Come On Rain, by Karen Hesse.
