We are off to a great start this school year! All of us have adapted to first grade very well. September has been a very busy month but I am confident that all of our routines are running smoothly in our classroom. Literacy: We are almost finished launching the first 30 days of both of our Writer's and Reader's Workshops. We have been learning and practicing our workshop model routines each day. In Writer's Workshop, we have been practicing skills that good writers, or authors, demonstrate. We check our work and rate it on our detail scale. Soon we will be publishing our first writing piece! This month we will be focusing on small moment stories, where can bring small moments to life. We will also begin analyzing nonfiction chapter books together. In Reader's Workshop we have learned the routines for independent reading and partner reading as we work with our individualized book bags that contain "just right'' for each of us. This month we will focus on defining different points of view, character traits, and key details. It is going to be a busy and exciting time for our workshops to enhance our literacy skills! Math: For math, we use an interactive GoMath! series. Additional resources are found on ThinkCentral (the link is on our class homepage). We have just completed Chapter 1 and are taking our chapter test soon. This chapter covered all addition concepts. Our next chapter, Chapter 2 involves all subtraction concepts. Remember to look for information in your child's Raccoon folders regarding ThinkCentral. It is a great program that really keeps the students involved.  Phonics: For phonics, we use a program called FUNdations. It is a great way to help teach students to decode unknown words, as well as practice handwriting and phonemic skills. This past month we reviewed the alphabet and the basic sounds that each letter makes. In October we will be introducingtrick words in addition to our 100 Fry Words to help students realize different irregular spellings.  Social Studies: For social studies, we have been completing a lot of All About Me activities. This is a great way for students to get to know each other in the beginning of the year. We will continue doing this and begin to introduce different types of communities and community helpers. I am looking forward to hearing about some jobs that the students may want to pursue when they are older. I knew I wanted to become a teacher since I was in first grade! :)  Science: For science, we have been discussing the parts of a plant and the purpose for each. We have been focusing particularly on leaves and how they change in our new season. We are going to continue to investigate plants further and talk about different ways that they can be grouped, and they can serve as food for different animals and humans.  We are super busy learning a lot in Room 13. Come by and see!
